This lesson explains what climate is and why it's related to
weather. It explains how weather is a series of atmospheric phenomenon
and climate is a record of the various phenomenons. The Climate lesson
also looks at seven different regional climates in the continental United
States. Each climate is given it's own page discussing its location and
characteristics.
Quiz: The Climate lesson has an online quiz that deals with information
from the seven regional climate zones. The quiz is graded online and results
are e-mailed to the teacher.
Activities: The Climate lesson has two climate-related activities
for students to do. The first, Climate Watch, has the student observe the
weather each day and record what he or she sees. The student can record
his or her data in any appropriate manner, from drawing pictures of a sunny
sky to recording the temperature and rain fall on a chart. At the end of
a month, students can go back online and look for information about their
hometown's climate. We have provided a link on the Activities page to a
site containing the climate of some major U.S. cities to help. When climate
information is found, students can compare it with their information and
see how accurate they were.
Older students can do Climate Watch using another city or place other
than their home town. Students will need to find weather sites to keep
track of the weather of the place they choose. The following link is to
a site which will help older students find weather information: http://www.wxresearch.com/wrc.htm
The second activity, Your Favorite Weather, is a writing exercise. It
asks students to choose their favorite kind of weather and write about
it. They are to mention what kind of climates would their favorite weather
be found it, where they can find that kind of climate, why they like the
weather they chose, and what they would do if you moved to a climate with
their favorite weather. Teachers can choose what form the writing should
take, from short answers to a short story to a research paper.
